ORANGE BEACH, AL 251/981-1664 Email: giftshop@tackyjacks.com August 2007
Labor Day is fast approaching and a
season change is soon to take place. It has been a great summer for
Tacky Jacks with lots of our old regulars and many new people
finding our special place on the bayou. Until recently, it has not
been an unusually hot summer but since the first of August it has
reminded us all of why this time of year is called "dog days"; but
even so, the afternoon breeze usually cools us off. Fall is one of
the truly great times to be on the beach, cool nights and warm days
are soon to be here and the fishing is great right on into November.
We are planning some great surprises this fall so "stay tuned for
details". We will have a "football weekend" every weekend and will
be giving away tickets to both Alabama and Auburn football. More on
that to come but plan the games around Tacky Jacks.
Our new kitchen is soon to be opened and this expansion will help greatly with the time it takes to be seated. If you have not been in lately you have not seen all the construction work in progress; but the new kitchen has more than doubled in size, with new coolers, fryers, and all the trimmings. The inside bar has been moved----and guess what, you now FACE the water sitting at the bar. TACKY JACKS II Tacky Jacks II, at Fort Morgan is now serving the famous Tacky Jacks breakfast. If you have not been to Tacky II, you need to drive down. Fort Morgan Rd. (hwy 180) still retains the feeling of yester years, as it has been the last part of the island to be developed. There is a wonderful bird sanctuary, and of course the Fort itself. One of the older forts in America, it is a much over looked historical place. Tacky Jacks II offers a fantastic view of Mobile Bay and you can watch a breath taking view of the setting sun. TACKY JACKS FOOTBALL We are going to have lots going on for the upcoming season and if it is football you crave, then be sure to be with us. Every weekend we will be giving away football tickets to both Alabama and Auburn games. In the spirit of PARTY on Sat. Sept.15, the Arkansas and Alabama game, we will be roasting a pig for all our fans; so bring your Bama or Hog shirt and bring your appetite and enjoy the game. Starting the week of August 20th you will be able to register for football tickets by simply writing your name, address and phone number on the bottom of your receipt and drop into the box in the restaurant or the Gift Shop. Every Saturday between 6 and 9 PM names will be drawn and you can pick your choice of the Alabama or Auburn box. These tickets will be "home games only" and will not include the Auburn/Alabama contest. So be sure to be with us, and of course the more you play-------------! THANKS TO THE WHARF Tacky Jacks congratulates the Wharf for the great concerts they have brought to the island. They have had some great entertainers and even though they seat 10,000 people, we understand they have had "sold out" events. Just another reason for you to visit Orange Beach. Great fishing, great food, great entertainment, and the best beaches anywhere. And on top of that, we still extend "southern hospitality". So, if you have read about us and wondered what we have to offer in Orange Beach why not plan a trip and see for yourself why we have visitors from all over the world say, "it is my favorite place". THE 'H' WORD The first hurricane of the season looks as if Mexico will get it, but thus far it has been quite benign. But there is talk that it is not politically correct to use the "H" word, so I should say tropical occurrence or is that tropical event. I just cannot keep it straight. So, if referring to the hurricane of 1906 or 1916, it seems that I am suppose to say, the tropical occurrence of 1916! I wonder if people in California say, seismic occurrence when they have an earthquake and if that is correct maybe we should say, "huge wave event" for tsunami. We grew up calling the fish dolphin, dolphin but then Flipper, the TV show caused the restaurant industry concern that children would cry if they saw dolphin on the menu, so the name was changed to mahi-mahi, which is Polynesian. Why not call it Dorado, which is correct in Spanish and at least Spanish is spoken on the Gulf of Mexico? We have survived on this coast for a long long time and part of living here, is hurricanes but as far as scaring off our visitors-----well they are a lot smarter than to think they don’t know when to leave if a storm threatens. Put your finger on the map of the U.S. and anywhere you do there is some sort of natural disaster possible; but your chances of being hurt are much greater on the highway. As a matter of record, after Ivan, Tacky Jacks was open in 10 days at the Bistro and 30 or so days after, the restaurant and Gift Shop were back open. It has always been the plan, in case we needed it, to use the Bistro to get us back on line and that is exactly how it happened. Those of us that live by the sea, know that hurricanes are part of our life, but in the past 80 years we have had two that hit directly here. The rest, and some people got damage in other storms, were not major storms. CONTEST WINNERS Jim and Kathy Brown won the contest from the last newsletter and if you would like the answers, email the giftshop@tackyjacks,com. Jim and Kathy or longtime friends and customers at Tacky Jacks and Jim is known "as the mayor" of Tackys, so they did have an advantage. Congratulations to the winners! Once again, thanks to all our great
customers, and a very special thanks to those of you that took the
time to write notes to tell us thanks for something we did for you.
It was our pleasure but we do say a big "THANKS" for your kindness
in telling us. As always, we want your comments and feedback, so do
not hesitate to send email to
